Welcome from First Year Advising!

Katrina Headshot Resized

Dear incoming first-year students,

Welcome to Notre Dame! We are so excited to have you become part of the Notre Dame family. As Director of First Year Advising, I am privileged to welcome you to what will be a year of transitions and traditions.

Your transition will involve a lot of change - from exploring a new community, to encountering new perspectives, to embarking on an academic and intellectual journey of discernment and discovery. You will soon encounter and contribute to the many wonderful traditions that make the Notre Dame community truly inspiring inside and outside the classroom.

One of those traditions is how we invite new students into our community of scholars through integrative and personalized one-on-one academic advising. In June, you will hear from your First Year Advisor, a professional academic advisor who will support you as you through the advising and registration process over the summer. They will ask a lot of you. In turn, you can expect a lot from them. They will be your academic connection to the University over the next few months, serving as a source of knowledge as you explore the many and varied curricular and co-curricular opportunities of this great scholarly community.

As your first year at Notre Dame draws nearer, you'll hear from the Center for University Advising and your advisor. Since all communications from Notre Dame will be sent to your Notre Dame Gmail account, it is important that you activate your NetID, access your new email account, and check your inbox daily.

An email from "Okta" will be sent to you in the next few days with additional directions to activate your NetID.

By engaging fully in dialogue, you equip our team with the ability to better serve and celebrate you. We’ll seek to walk alongside you not only during this monumental time of transition and tradition, but throughout every turn of your Notre Dame journey.

Much of our partnership this summer will center on creating a fall course schedule based on your unique interests and preferences. Your first step is to review First Year Advising’s Fall Semester Registration Checklist. This checklist outlines concrete steps incoming first-year students can take in preparation for course registration in late July. By following these requirements and recommendations, you'll be ready to register for your first courses as a student at Notre Dame.

The first item on this list, after from activating your NetId and ND Gmail, is the Center for University Advising’s Summer 2022 Questionnaire. A link to this questionnaire will be sent to all incoming first-year students via their ND Gmail account on May 6, 2022. Your responses will be used to determine the most appropriate advisor assignment. Please complete this first item of the Registration Checklist by May 20, 2022 and review upcoming checklist items throughout the summer.

In time, we hope to help you find a home at Notre Dame. Until then, welcome to ND and Go Irish!

Sincerely,

Katrina Higgins
