Leonor Wangensteen is an academic advisor in the University of Notre Dame’s Office of First Year Advising and holds the rank of Associate Advising Professor. With a special focus on advising students who intend to pursue engineering, she also supports student exploration of academic interests across all undergraduate majors and programs. She was the recipient of the 2018-19 Dockweiler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.

Wangensteen is particularly interested in issues of diversity, inclusivity, and equality in higher education, and serves as Director of Undocumented Student Initiatives under the Center for University Advising. The foci of her scholarship involve advising methodology and constructing academic opportunities for underrepresented and vulnerable student populations. She has published several articles and given numerous presentations at national conferences, campus faculty workshops, and in other trainings. 

Wangensteen received her B.A. in Spanish Literature and Fine Arts in 2003 and her M.A. in Iberian and Latin American Studies in 2009 from the University of Notre Dame. She studied abroad as an undergraduate at the Fundación Ortega y Gasset in Toledo, Spain.

Fluent in Spanish and possessing a reading knowledge of Italian, Wangensteen was a special projects and editor assistant for Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies prior to her advising faculty appointment. Much of her work at the Kellogg Institute involved Spanish translation and communications.

An adjunct faculty member in the University’s Department of Romance Languages and Literatures from 2008 to 2012, Wangensteen taught beginning and intermediate Spanish courses and was involved in community-based learning initiatives.


Current Projects

Current Notre Dame projects:

  • Serving as one of the primary points of contact for Notre Dame undocumented students, working closely with liaisons across campus to address issues of access, eligibility, and other matters in relation to academic programs and scholarly engagement.
  • Developing UndocuAlly workshops for staff and faculty.  
  • Developing peer and alumni mentor and networking opportunities for the Notre Dame undocumented community. 
  • Developing department guidelines for “auditing” student programs and opportunities to be more inclusive and accessible to students with undocumented and DACA status. As part of ongoing efforts to increase DreamND resources, she would like to provide undocu/DACA students with a directory of eligible student programs and opportunities, which may be located on the existing resource website.

  • Designing and moderating eTutorial UNDOCU Advising: Working with DACA, Undocumented, & DREAM Students.
  • Providing updates for the Clearinghouse site on Working with Undocumented, Dreamer, and Immigrant Students.
  • Serving on the Inclusion and Engagement Committee and Emerging Leaders Program Advisory Board.
